Choosing An Online Store Checklist
re you considering an online store? There are hundreds of ecommerce programs available and choosing one can seem overwhelming. Use this checklist to help you select the right one the first time.
It helps considerably to know what you need. This checklist is designed to help you identify the top 10 things you'll need to efficiently run your store:
1. Will you be shipping physical products? If so, you'll want to use a shopping cart that can accurately estimate shipping charges. Some can connect with UPS, DHL, FedEx, and the post office to get real time shipping quotes.
2. Will you be selling downloadable products like programs, e-books, etc? If so, you'll want a shopping cart that can securely deliver your electronic file without compromising security. Be sure the download link limits the number of times the file can be downloaded and make sure the download link expires. You don't want your products to be downloaded without payment.
3. Will you offer an affiliate program? If you expect to offer an affiliate program (which is a great way to build an army of salespeople for free), it's important you use and affiliate program that can be used universally regardless of the shopping cart in use. If you ever change shopping carts in the future you don't want to scrap the affiliate system, too.
4. Will you have multiple pricing structures? Many sites offer different prices to different customer categories. Retail visitors get one price, and dealers who are buying to resell your products get another. Will the cart you choose support multiple pricing categories?
5. Will you rely on internet promotions and search engines to bring customers to your store? If so, you'll definitely want to find a search engine friendly shopping cart. Many shopping carts do not create pages that are easily found in search engine results.
6. Will the cart support your payment methods? How will you accept payment for your products? Will you be taking credit cards, PayPal, checks? Make sure your cart will support not only the payment types you'll offer but can connect to the payment gateway offered by your credit card merchant account provider.
7. Do you need to track inventory? If your products are in limited supply, will your shopping cart manage inventory for you, preventing orders when a product is not available?
8. Will bookkeeping be easy? How will you keep track of order income, sales tax, etc.? Many small businesses use an accounting program like QuickBooks or Peachtree. Can you import sales into your accounting program?
9. Is there a trial available? Once you've narrowed down the possibilities, insist on a free trial. There is no substitute for actually using a program before you make a committment. You'll learn more in a couple days of using a program than you will in weeks of asking questions.
10. How is the support? This is probably the most important item if your business will rely on the continued operation of your web store. Does the company understand your business practices and how promptly do they respond when you have a problem? Is support included, or will you be paying extra?
With a little preplanning you should be able to make a wise decision so the launch or update of your store can be successful. Happy selling!
