Cisco CCNP / BCMSN Exam Tutorial: Multicasting And The RPF Check

Multicasting is a vital topic on your BCMSN, CCNP, and CCIE exams, and it can also be very confusing when you first start studying it. Multicasting uses concepts that are unlike anything you've run into in your routing protocol studies, and that can throw you at first. I speak from experience that multicasting is like any other Cisco technology - learn the basics, master the fundamentals, and then build your skills on that foundation.

One such fundamental is the RPF Check, or Reverse Path Forwarding Check.

A fundamental difference between unicasting and multicasting is that a unicast is routed by sending it toward the destination, while a multicast is routed by sending it away from its source.

"toward the destination" and "away from its source" sound like the same thing, but they're not. A unicast is going to follow a single path from source to destination. The only factor the routers care about is the destination IP address - the source IP address isn't a factor.

With multicast routing, the destination is a multicast IP group address. It's the multicast router's job to decide which paths will lead back to the source (upstream) and which paths are downstream from the source. Reverse Path Forwarding refers to the router's behavior of sending multicast packets away from the source rather than toward a specific destination.

The RPF Check is run against any incoming multicast packet. The multicast router examines the interface that the packet arrived on. If the packet comes in on an upstream interface - that is, an interface found on the reverse path that leads back to the source - the packet passes the check and will be forwarded. If the packet comes in on any other interface, the packet is dropped.

The RPF Check serves to verify the integrity of your multicasting network, and also serves as a reminder that the basic operation of multicasting is a lot different than unicasting!

Screening Out Prospective Tenants Based on Credit Checks?

Increasingly, landlords throughout North America are screening prospective tenants in order to reduce the risks involved when renting to unknown individuals. Risks which can easily become quite costly to an unsuspecting landlord.

It's easy to prove the increasing popularity of tenant screening. See for yourself! Simply "Google" the following two words, tenant screening. Within seconds you will be flooded with a variety of small and large companies offering the service, and links to information on tenant screening. Go ahead! The last time I tried the results numbered 4,110,000.

The high number of results demonstrate that there is a rising awareness, amongst landlords, about the value of taking the necessary steps to protecting your property. The demand is growing and so is the supply.

However, although tenant screening is an important and effective tool for any landlord, there is an overwhelming trend, on the part of landlords and the service providers, to use the results of a credit check as the main reason for screening out prospective tenants. In my opinion, this is a mistake.

Of course, credit checks do provide valuable data on individuals. These reports inform us of the prospective tenant's credit history, both good and bad. But what else does an automated list of vague descriptions, and codes tell us about a potential tenant?

I dare say the answer is, not much.

Keeping aside the fact that credit reports are one-sided, and often contain errors. Credit checks can not provide any true insight on a potential tenant. For example, the credit check may lead you to think the tenant is a bad prospect, but it doesn't take into account the possibility that she went through a difficult period a few years back, but has long been "back on track".

A landlord can easily pass up a "perfect tenant", in his thirties, simply because he had trouble making payments while going through school, in his twenties. Base your decision on a credit report, and you lose a potentially ideal tenants.

What about a favorable credit report?

In my opinion, it would be a mistake for any landlord or property manager to place too much worth on a perfect credit score.

As a bad credit report can be misleading, so can a good credit report. For example, the report will not tell us that this particular individual has a reputation of constantly arguing with neighbors, and causing an all-around uncomfortable atmosphere for the landlord's other tenants.

As well, a credit report will not describe how the prospective tenant, with the perfect credit check, sitting in front of you, stuck the former landlord with an $800.00 hydro bill... Unpaid utilities often do not appear on a credit report.

Base your decision on a credit report, and you take the chance of entering into a rental agreement with a disaster.

As a landlord, it is in your best interest to exercise due diligence when considering a prospective tenant, and that means tenant screening. However, in order to truly ensure a potential tenant is the right one for you, contacting current and past landlords, employers and references is the best method.

First hand information is, and will always be better, and more revealing than any automated report.

THE CHECKLIST THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE: The Genius of John Davin

Anybody who rides a commuter train or a bus today, or who visits an airport, can easily see the impact of office technologies on the current workforce. People are wired to go. There are the ones wearing the headset with the wide band at the base of the skull, removed from hearing you by huge round earphones. There are the ones smartly attired with the "Blue Tooth" gracefully curving along the cheekbone into the ear. There are those who sit fixated, rapidly weaving their thumbs across the dashboard of the Blackberry style Personal Digital Assistant. Others are using laptops in a variety of sizes with a variety of screens. Some are entertaining themselves, watching contemporary films on tiny screens or aggressively playing computerized games. Some are hypnotized by the data grids with which they are working as they hunch over laptops like ancient gnomes. Still others are tapping away at text, giving and receiving instructions or creating documents that may be read a half a world away.

This is not your grandfather's office. If your grandfather had an office....

No. This is the world of connectivity---the world where workers can be questioned in the shower; can talk to their home office as they raft down the Colorado River; can order supplies from Chicago from their remote location in Australia; can purchase Canadian wines for their restaurant in Brazil, next day delivery.

But how efficient is all this stuff anyway? The answer my friend, may depend upon on whether or not you have ever met John Davin.

For many years John Davin owned and operated a retail computer store. He got to see all the new office toys as they were produced and as they evolved. Because of the knowledge base that he developed, and because of his genuine interest in his customers, Davin realized they had common needs. Among them was competing effectively by using new cost effective marketing approaches made possible by the changing technologies.

Today, John Davin is the author of six books in the computing industry; is a much in-demand guest speaker; is an effective seminar presenter; and finds a multitude of other ways to share his twenty plus years of on-line business and technology research and consulting.

In addition to being proficient and professional, John Davin is also generous. His website notes that, If you truly want to start a business or need business help with your school or church and can't afford his book, he'll get it to you at no charge, if you contact him in advance. Davin's website is www.MyNewOffice.com It is home to a directory of business tools, resources and other business directories for small business owners.

Davin has a Business Check List that is effective for new and experienced business owners. This single list has helped many thousands of entrepreneurs to capitalize on the Internet and utilize their office technologies to make money, generate more leisure hours, and attain optimal earning from production hours.

Jonathan Jones, a seasoned management consultant says that Davin is "passionate about continually developing his products, and that currency makes his products increase in value every day." Another user, M.E.Prosser, an automotive business consultant, says that if he was a college professor looking for the single most important source material to help business students understand the depth, scope and power of the Internet for business use, he would direct them to MyNewOffice.com to save them both time and wasted dollars looking anywhere else.

In my book, Going For Gold After 50: an Illustrated Guide to High Probability Investing," I note that one of the ways to build wealth is to start a business.

John Davin's Business Check List is a free bonus included with a purchase of my BizWorth Valuation Software. John Davin's genius at helping entrepreneurs make the very most of new technologies is a perfect pairing with the BizWorth Valuation Sytem. Bizworth is a unique software program that helps entrepreneurs generate a justifiable fair market value for the business they dream will become a significant asset.

Public Speakers! Check Out These Most-Mispronounced Words and Avoid Pronunciation Gaffes.

Public Speakers! Check Out These Most-Mispronounced Words.

Yes, it's a living language--English is--but there still remain words whose correct pronunciation has yet to catch up with their mis-pronunciation! In addition to giving you the right pronunciation, I'll throw in a simple rule or two so you can figure out others on your own and not be afraid of embarrassing yourself with Pronunciation Gaffes.

(As a therapist for thirty-some years, I hate to do this to you--use the "should" word, but I gotta do it here.)

A Rule: When you have two "c's" together, the first C is pronounced like a K, the second like an S.

  • ACCEDE should be ak-SEED

  • ACCELERATE should be ak-SELL-uhr-ate

  • ACCESSIBLE should be ak-SESS-i-buhl

  • ACCESSORY should be ak-SESS-or-ee

  • ECCENTRIC should be ek-SEN-trik

  • FLACCID should be FLAK-sid

  • Only when there are double S's are they pronounced with only the S sound. i.e. as-SESS.

Middle Eastern countries are very much in the news these days, and it's nice to pronounce a person's country correctly. In the case of IRAQ and IRAN the I's are not pronounced "eye", but a short i, as in BIT. If you want to get fancy, it sounds both pretty and authentic if you can flip the R.

    The A's are broad:

  • Iraq is not "eye rack" It is "i-ROCK";

  • Iran is not "eye ran". It is "i-RON".

  • Here are a few of the words I'm hearing commonly mispronounced:

  • CANDIDATE is CAN-di-date (Pronounce both D's)

  • ECHELON is ESH-e-lon

  • ETC. (etcetera) is eht-SEH-ter-a (No K sound)

  • NUCLEAR is NOO-klee-uhr

  • PATHOS is PAY-thohs (not pay-thahs)

  • PLETHORA is PLETH-or-a

  • VULNERABLE is VUL-ner-a-buhl (Sound the first L.)

  • SCHISM is SIZ-em

  • I hope this little foray to the dictionary will give you the confidence to use these very nice words with the security that you're saying them correctly.

Check Out A Vending Machine Sale ? Start Your Own Home Based Business

A vending machine sale will give you a clear picture of the wide range of vending machines with which you can start your own profitable home based business. There are many distributors of vending machines and bulk vending products that will supply you with all the information you need regarding prices of machines and the bulk products you need to restock them. While candy and food service vending machines are the most common, there are many more types of vending machines you can use to turn a profit. It is only when you attend a vending machine sale that you get the overall picture of how this business works.

You don?t have to spend time searching the classifieds to find a vending machine sale near you. A simple online search will net you thousands of results for distributors of bulk vending products and the machines that sell them. The distributors have all kinds of vending machines, both new and used, so you can search for the cheapest machines in the line of products that you want to sell. Getting the machines for a sale price along with the bulk products means that it won?t take you very long to get back your initial investment in sales.

The main factor in making money with a vending machine business is to choose a location where there is lots of traffic. Traffic translates into sales when your vending machines are visible. Bus stations, airports, office buildings, hotels ? all of these are prime money making locations for vending machines of all types. A vending machine sale will let you see right away the machines you think could work for you. When you get a price list from distributors of bulk vending products, you can easily do the math to see how you can make money.

With a vending machine sale, you have the opportunity to have a business where you do not have to worry about credit card fraud, bounced checks or credit. The vending machine business is a cashless industry in that you do not have to even deal with the customers. You get permission from business owners to place your machines in their location and purchase the products from distributors of bulk vending products. Since you buy in bulk, you will only need to make purchases occasionally. The more bulk products you buy, the more money you can save.

Even with a vending machine sale, you should not expect to become rich over night. Like any other business, the vending machine business requires work. If you start small and learn the ropes, you can easily develop this home based business into your main source of income. You will need to have space in your home to store the bulk products that you buy from distributors of bulk vending products, especially if you have a lot of vending machines. You also need to keep good records of your purchases of bulk products and the results of the money you make from sales in each machine. This is how you can really get a good picture of which machines are the best and what you need to look for at the next vending machine sale.

Tired of Hype Opportunities? Check Out Online Bookselling

Every time I log in to my email account, I find dozens of ?opportunities? for making a ton of money ? guaranteed ? but the guarantees are as worthless as the opportunities. Sometimes, I wish I could meet the people that make these offers just so I could see if they would lie to me like that in person.

I don't know about you, but I get tired of reading "opportunity" offerings that are nothing but scams and I cannot believe some of the infomercials that are on TV. Are there really enough people out there stupid enough to buy those products?A friend of mine was in China a few years back to visit a plastic injection molding and machining facility. He stopped at a particular machine tool, a machining center (milling/drilling machine) because the operator had quite an impressive display of the various products he had machined over the years, some of which my friend recognized from advertising in the U.S. He asked the operator of this particular machine to tell him about his collection, but the man did not speak English and his replies had to be translated. When he asked, "Why do you keep all of these things here at your machine?" He was told, "I keep them around to inspire ideas for other products that Americans will buy." Later he was told by someone else in the group that the translation of the man's answer was not complete and that the man actually said, "I keep them around hoping to come up with my own products to sell the Americans because they are stupid enough to buy almost anything."

The same is true about many of the "opportunity" offers made in email solicitations, TV infomercials, magazine advertisements, and just about everywhere else you look. Somebody is offering something that is not going to make anyone any money except the guy selling the "opportunity."

I am not selling anything here, but I do want to tell you about an opportunity for a home-based business that can make you a few thousand dollars a month while working at it part-time, and if you opt to expand your business, it can provide you with a full-time income for full-time work. You are independent, you don't have to buy instructions from anyone, you don't have to send me or anyone else a dime to start in the business yourself.

Have you heard of Amazon.com, ebay.com, Alibris.com, Half.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Abebooks.com, etc? They are all legitimate businesses with established reputations, and you can sell used books through all of them as an independent bookseller. Sure, they will all charge you to list your inventory and a commission on each sale, but most are very reasonable and their fees do not mean that much if you are listing and selling enough books.

You do not need to buy the books you sell from any particular place, you can get them at garage sales, thrift stores, flea markets, Friends of the Library fundraising shelves, book sales, used bookstores, etc., and if you know how to do it right, you will know the online value of every book you buy before you pay a penny for it, so your risk of losing money on any purchase is minimized. I have averaged over 350% profit from the sales of books online for over five years now, and that is from the sales of thousands of books. Where else can you invest a dollar and be assured of making $3.50 profit when you sell it. Note that I did not guarantee that you will make $3.50 on every book you sell, or that you will make a profit at all. I do not want to hype the business or mislead anyone. There have been books that I have lost money selling, and I have had to clear the firewood (books with no value) from my inventory shelves many times, but I averaged $3,50 profit on every book I ever bought for my inventory. This means that if I buy 100 books for a dollar each, sell 75 of them, and donate the other 25 as firewood, I still made $350 profit because my per book 350% profits include the books I discard and the ones I might lose money selling. It is really exciting to pay $1.50 for a book and sell it for $1,395.00 less than two weeks later, and that is exactly what one bookseller I know did last month. She made 92,900% on that one book and she found it the first time she ever went scouting for inventory! I have personally never made that much from the sale of one book alone, but I have sold countless books that I paid $0.25 to $3.00 for and made $50 to $300 selling.

So, what does it take to get started in the online bookselling business? Well, you need to set up a seller's account on one or more of the online marketplaces, you need to get some packing materials, you will have to buy some inventory to sell, you will need to list your inventory with the online marketplace, and then you will need to pack and ship the books you sell. The marketplaces will pay you periodically for the sales you have made. Some of them pay every two weeks, some once a month, and some will pay you via direct deposit to your bank. The keys to being a successful online bookseller are (1) dedication, (2) time, and (3) patience.

With respect to dedication, you will need to dedicate yourself to building an inventory and continually adding to it. There are some free online tools that will help you look up a book's online value using the ISBN or the title and author, and knowing the value before you buy the book is necessary. The time aspect would seem intuitively obvious, but like any other legitimate business, online bookselling is not going to make you any money if you do not put some time into building your business. Nobody is ever going to knock on your front door and hand you a business that will make you millions of dollars with no effort required on your part. I am not saying that online bookselling is going to make you millions, but it could make you a very nice income if you make the effort to build your own business. When it comes to selling your inventory, some patience is required. Like me, you may find some valuable books, list them, and then wonder why nobody has bought them after a week. Well, some titles do not have more than one or two customers looking for them in any given year. The key is to price your copy competitively, make sure your price remains competitive, and wait for the buyer to find it in the marketplace. I like to think of it as being analogous to fishing. When I go fishing, I do not expect to catch every fish in the lake, just the one looking for what I am offering on my hook.

If you are really looking for a legitimate way to make extra income or a business opportunity that you can scale to meet your financial requirements, you should check out online bookselling. I am sure that if there was a way to control the information and sell the "opportunity," you would have heard of it by nowFeature Articles, but most of the information needed to get started is free online and all of the online marketplaces have seller information pages to help you better understand the business and learn how to get started.
